A petrochemical is a chemical made from petroleum — the oil taken out of the ground — or from natural gas. Plastics, many paints, some fabrics, fertiliser, and a lot of factory materials start this way, though actually the finished thing may not look or smell like oil at all. People also use it before a noun: the petrochemical industry, a petrochemical plant. It is a formal news-and-science word, not kitchen-table talk, unless you work in that world.
