When someone acts perversely, they go against what people want, or against what would be reasonable — often on purpose. It is not just “being difficult.” There is a twist: they can see the normal, helpful thing, and they do the opposite anyway. A child who perversely refuses the very toy they asked for is a clear case. People also use it when events turn out in the most awkward way, as if the world were being stubborn: a plan can perversely go wrong at the last minute. And though actually this next use is very common in careful English, it surprises learners: “I was perversely glad” means you felt glad even though you know you were not supposed to. Everyday talk might just say “weirdly” or “for some reason.” The adverb is a bit formal. It is not a sex word. That is a different, later life of the same old family.
