    To peruse something is to read it, especially with care: you go through it and really look. That is the meaning books teach. Though actually, a lot of English speakers also use it for a lighter look — they “peruse” a menu or the shelves, meaning they let their eyes wander, not that they study every word. Some teachers call that loose; in real life both uses are common. Either way the word sounds a little formal. An older meaning, “to use something up until it is gone,” has died out.

組成From either Medieval Latin perūtor, perūsitō (“wear out”) or Anglo-Norman peruser (“use up”). Those two lines of meaning once lived side by side; only the “examine / read” line survived. By surface analysis it looks like per- (“through”) + use.
