Pertinacity is the noun for that same determined holding-on: the quality of continuing to believe something, or to do something, and not giving up. It is not a short burst of effort. It is the long grip. People sometimes praise pertinacity as strength, though actually the word can also name a kind of stubbornness that wears other people out. A scientist, a , or a child who will not drop a question can all show pertinacity; listeners decide whether that sounds brave or just hard to move. The word is formal and rather . In ordinary talk you are more likely to hear determination, stubbornness, or they just wouldn’t give up.
