The personals are the part of a newspaper — and later of a website — where people pay to print a short private message: looking for a date, a roommate, a lost cat, or “if you were the woman in the red coat on the train…” They are also called personal ads. In older American papers, “the personals” were a known corner, a mix of lonely-hearts notes and tiny classifieds. The word is almost always plural in this meaning. Young readers may meet it more in films set in the past, because a lot of this has moved to apps. Though actually, the tone can be sweet, funny, or a little sad; it is not only about romance.
