A personable person is pleasant to be around and easy to like — warm, friendly, and often also nice to look at, though not in a movie-star way. Job ads love this word: they want someone personable at the front desk, meaning they smile, listen, and make people comfortable. It is a compliment, a little formal, more at home in writing and interviews than in street talk. Though actually, it says more about manner than about deep kindness; someone can be personable in a meeting and still be cold when the door is shut. It is not a word for “a real person” or “about private life.”
