Your persona is the face you put on when other people are watching — the way you act at work, on stage, or online, which makes people think you are a certain kind of person. It is not always a lie, but it is not the whole of you either. A quiet person may have a loud, funny persona in class. A singer’s persona might be wild, even if they are shy at home. The word comes from Latin for a mask, the kind actors wore so the crowd would know the character. Psychologists still use it that way: the social mask. In everyday English it is a little fancy; journalists and people who talk about film and pop stars like it. Though actually, we all have more than one, and that is normal — the persona you use with your boss is not the one you use with your grandmother.

From Latin persōna, of uncertain origin; suggested to be from Etruscan φersu 'mask'.

組成Borrowed from Latin persōna, “mask; character in a play.” Scholars have linked it further to Etruscan and perhaps Greek, but that is not certain. It is a doublet of person and parson: same old root, different English words.
