In American police talk and crime shows, a perp is the person they say did that crime — the one they are hunting, holding, or walking into the station. It is a , shop-talk word, not courtroom language. A lawyer, a judge, or a would usually say suspect, the accused, or offender. On US television you also hear “perp walk”: marching the person past cameras on purpose. It can sound sure of guilt, so careful English often waits and says alleged. Do not mix it with prep (getting ready) or pep (energy). This entry is the crime sense; a newer money sense of perp is a different and does not belong here.
