    In ordinary talk, peroxide is the sharp, watery liquid in the brown bottle: hydrogen peroxide. A weak mix fizzes on a cut and can kill ; use a stronger mix to make hair lighter. That is why “peroxide blonde” means hair that was bleached, not born that colour. You can also use it as a verb: to peroxide hair is to lighten it with this liquid. Chemists use the word more widely for any compound that has two oxygen atoms joined to each other — the bathroom bottle is just the one most people mean. It is not oxygen gas, not bleach powder, and not a perfume; it smells sharp and can burn skin if it is strong. The school first-aid bottle is a weak mix; the salon mix is not.

組成From per- + oxide. In chemistry, per- here marks “more oxygen than the usual oxide”. Oxide is a compound of oxygen and another element.
