To perjure yourself is to lie in a court of law after you have made a serious promise — an oath — to tell the truth. English almost always uses it with yourself: you perjure yourself; you do not usually “perjure a fact”. It is a legal, formal word. The crime is called perjury, and it is treated as a serious offence because the court depends on that promise. News writers still use it for lying on the stand, but it is not a word for ordinary lying at home.
