Perish is a strong, rather formal word for 'to die,' especially used when many people die together, often suddenly or violently — news reports say things like '200 people perished when the ship sank,' where everyday speech would just say 'died.' It's also used, more gently, for things that decay or go bad over time — rubber, food, or fabric can perish, meaning it breaks down and becomes useless. There's also a common British phrase, 'perish the thought,' which means 'I really hope that never happens' — said half-jokingly about something the speaker dreads.
