1. 1

Perfunctorily is the adverb: doing something quickly and without care or interest, only because it is expected. The doing is real — the person does not skip it — but the attention is missing. A guard glances perfunctorily at your bag and you through. A doctor nods perfunctorily while looking at the screen. Someone kisses their partner perfunctorily on the way out the door. The word almost always carries mild criticism from the person watching, and the criticism is specific: the form was there, the heart was not. It is a formal, written adverb, common in reports, reviews, and novels, and it usually comes right after the verb it describes. In speech people say 'he barely looked', 'she just went through the motions', or in Taiwan you would recognise it instantly as 敷衍. It does not mean 'badly' or 'lazily' — a perfunctory action can be technically correct and still count.
