    A penny-farthing is an old bicycle from the late 1800s. The front wheel is huge — the rider sat almost on top of it — and the back wheel is tiny. The name comes from two British coins: the penny was large, the farthing was very small, so the two wheels looked like those two coins side by side. It could go fast on a smooth road, but a fall from that high seat could hurt you badly, which is one reason a later “safety” bicycle with two wheels the same size took over. Today you see penny-farthings in museums, old photos, and the odd parade, not as everyday bikes. The name is written with a : penny-farthing.
