A penlight is a small electric torch, about as thin as a pen, that you carry in your hand or pocket. Doctors and nurses use one to look into eyes and throats; other people keep one in a drawer or bag for dark corners and power cuts. It is a real light, not a toy pen: you cannot write with it. American English likes penlight (sometimes written pen light); in British English you may also hear pen torch, because torch is the ordinary British word for a . It is weaker and narrower than a full — a little beam, not a flood — which is exactly why it is handy in a pocket.
