The Peloponnese is the big southern piece of Greece. It hangs below the rest of the country and joins it by a narrow neck of land called the of Corinth. A canal now cuts through that neck, so on a map it can look almost like an island — and the old Greek name actually means “the island of Pelops,” after a king in Greek story. In ancient times was here; so were Olympia, where the old games were held, and Corinth. English also says Peloponnesus. The Peloponnesian War is the long fight in which and Athens tore at each other. Stress it roughly as Pe-lo-PON-nese.
