A pedlar was someone who, in the past, walked from place to place selling small things from a pack or a cart — needles, cloth, cheap toys, pots. This is mostly a history-and-story word now. Today we more often say street seller. Pedlar is the older British spelling; American English usually writes peddler. It can sound old-fashioned. Though actually, people still stretch peddler for someone pushing something you did not ask for — cheap goods, or even rumours — and in some places peddler is also used for a drug seller. For the old travelling seller with a pack, it is just a job word from another time.
