    A peahen is the female of the family. She is much plainer than the male — mostly brown and grey-green, with a short tail and no great fan. That plainness is the point, biologically: she sits on the eggs on the ground, so being hard to see keeps her and the chicks safe. In stories and in science writing the peahen usually appears as the one doing the choosing: the male spreads his enormous tail, and she looks him over and decides. That is a famous example in books about evolution, so you may meet the word in a reading passage before you ever meet the bird. Outside those contexts the word is uncommon, because most people just say '' for the female too. Use 'peahen' when the difference between male and female actually matters to what you are saying.
