1. 1

A hen is an adult female chicken. Farmers keep hens mainly for their eggs. The word is also sometimes used for the female of other birds, like a hen turkey. In British English, 'hen' is also a friendly, informal way to speak to a woman, a bit like 'dear' — and a 'hen night' or 'hen party' is a celebration for a woman just before her wedding.
