    A patroness is a woman who supports a person, a group, or an art — usually by giving money, or by letting them use her name, so other people take the work more seriously. She may never set foot on the stage; her help is the , the introduction, or the name on the poster. The older English pattern was patron for a man and patroness for a woman (patron + -ess, the old “female” ending). Though actually, many people now just say patron for both, and patroness can sound ceremonial or a little dated — the kind of word you meet on a concert programme (“patroness of the orchestra”) or in a history of the arts. Students should recognise it, but they should not feel they must use -ess for every woman who gives support. There is a church picture too: a woman saint said to watch over a place or a trade. That is a protector in heaven, not a donor. Same old “patron” idea, different job. This sense is the woman who gives money or her name.
