    The male head of a family, tribe, or group, usually an older man who is respected and has authority (the grandfather was the patriarch of the whole family). In the Bible, it's used for the early fathers of the Jewish people, like Abraham. It's also the title for a very high-ranking bishop in some Christian churches, like the Orthodox Church.
