Patagonia is a huge region at the southern end of South America. books often pin it on southern Argentina: few people, many sheep farms, wide windy land — and that is the picture most students meet. Though actually, the name also covers the matching southern part of Chile, with mountains, ice, and national parks; maps do not all draw the same northern line. In English it is a place name, so you give it a capital letter. People stretch it too: a big outdoor-clothing company took the name, so “Patagonia” on a jacket is a brand, not a ticket south. The place still carries that feeling of far-away, empty, cold-and-windy country.
