A real metal key that opens several different locks in one building. The locksmith set them so one key works on a group of doors — all the rooms on a floor, or the front door plus the office. Hotel staff used to carry a passkey for the rooms they cleaned. Though actually people also say master key, and the two get mixed. A master key is often the one that opens everything; a passkey may open a set, not necessarily every lock in the building. Do not mix this with today’s computer “passkey” (the phone-login kind). That is a new use of the same spelling. This entry is the physical key.
