1. 1

A grammar teacher’s verb. You passivize a sentence when you turn “The cat ate the fish” into “The fish was eaten (by the cat)”. It can also mean a verb or a pattern becomes passive in the language, without anyone doing it on purpose. From passive + -ize. British spelling is often passivise. Though actually, outside language classrooms and almost nobody says this word. It is not “to make a person passive” — shy, or not taking action. That is a different idea.
