A passbook is a small book from a bank. Each time you put money in or take money out, the bank the numbers in it, so you can see what you have. For a long time this was how ordinary people watched their savings. Though actually, in many places the paper passbook has almost gone; a phone app now does the same job, and younger people may never have held one. Older customers may still ask for it. The “pass” in the name is not the same as passport or password — it is just the old name for this little account book.
