The Parthenon is a famous ancient Greek temple on the , the high rock in Athens. It was built in the 5th century BC as a temple for , the city’s goddess. People call it the classic picture of a Greek temple: a of tall stone columns, once painted, with scenes around it. A huge statue of once stood inside. In 1687 it was badly smashed when stored there exploded during a war; that is why so much of it is a ruin today. Later, many sculptures were taken away (you will hear arguments about whether they should go back to Greece). Now the worry is slower damage: city pollution eating the marble, and huge numbers of visitors. The name is a proper name — always capital P. It is that one building, not a word for temples in general (that mix-up is with pantheon).
組成From Ancient Greek Παρθενών (Parthenṓn), from παρθενών (parthenṓn, ‘women’s chamber’), from παρθένος (parthénos, ‘virgin; young woman’). The temple belonged to Athena, spoken of as a virgin goddess.
