    In a garden, a parterre is a formal stretch of ground laid out in a clear pattern: beds of flowers or coloured earth, often in by low hedges, with paths in between. You are meant to read the shape — squares, scrolls, knots — as if looking at a design on a floor, sometimes from a terrace above. It is a French garden idea, grand and tidy, not a wild cottage patch. The word still sounds French in English. The same French word, literally ‘on the ground’, also named the ground floor of a theatre, and English has used parterre that way too — the pit or lower seats. For this entry, though, the garden sense is the one that matters: flower ground, low hedges, formal, not a single round in a front yard.
