1. 1

To parse is to take a sentence, or one word inside a sentence, and say what job it is doing. You name the subject, the verb, the object, and the little words that hold the sentence together.

To parse是 is to take拿 a sentence一個句子, or或者 one word inside a sentence句子裡的一個字, and而且 say what grammatical job it is doing說出它在文法上扮演什麼角色. You你 name the subject, the verb, the object指出主詞、動詞、受詞, and而且 the little words that hold the sentence together把句子連在一起的那些小字.

In an old-fashioned English class, “parse this sentence” meant: stand up and show the structure, piece by piece. That school use is still the core meaning.

In an old-fashioned English class在老式的英文課裡, "parse this sentence"「parse this sentence」 meant意思是: stand up and show the structure, piece by piece站起來,一部分一部分地說出句子結構. That school use那種學校用法 is still仍然是 the core meaning核心意思.

Though actually, today you will meet parse far more often from computer people than from grammar teachers. A program parses text when it works out the structure so a machine can do something with it: run a command, read a page, or check a line of code.

Though actually不過實際上, today今天 you你 will meet parse far more often更常遇到parse from computer people來自寫程式的人, than from grammar teachers而不是文法老師. A program一個程式 parses text剖析文字 when當 it它 works out the structure弄清楚結構 so a machine一台機器 can do something with it才能拿它做事情: run a command執行指令, read a page讀取頁面, or check a line of code或檢查一行程式碼.

People also stretch the word in ordinary talk, a little loosely: “I can’t parse what she just said” means “I can’t work out how the pieces fit, so I don’t know what she means.” It is a technical word, not a kitchen-table word, but it is honest about the same action in every room: you are not guessing the feeling of the sentence; you are taking it apart.

People人們 also也 stretch the word把這個字用得更寬鬆 in ordinary talk在日常對話裡, a little loosely稍微鬆一點: "I can't parse what she just said"「I can't parse what she just said」 means意思是 "I can't work out how the pieces fit「我搞不清楚各個部分怎麼兜起來」, so I don't know what she means所以我不知道她的意思." It它 is是 a technical word一個專業術語, not不是 a kitchen-table word一個閒聊用的字, but不過 it它 is honest about老實反映了 the same action in every room每個場合都一樣的動作: you你 are not guessing the feeling of the sentence不是在猜句子的感覺; you你 are taking it apart而是在把它拆開來看.
