To parse is to take a sentence, or one word inside a sentence, and say what job it is doing. You name the subject, the verb, the object, and the little words that hold the sentence together. In an old-fashioned English class, “parse this sentence” meant: stand up and show the structure, piece by piece. That school use is still the core meaning. Though actually, today you will meet parse far more often from computer people than from grammar teachers. A program parses text when it works out the structure so a machine can do something with it: run a command, read a page, or check a line of code. People also stretch the word in ordinary talk, a little loosely: “I can’t parse what she just said” means “I can’t work out how the pieces fit, so I don’t know what she means.” It is a technical word, not a kitchen-table word, but it is honest about the same action in every room: you are not guessing the feeling of the sentence; you are taking it apart.
組成Possibly from Middle English pars (“parts of speech, grammar”), from Old French pars, from Latin pars (“part, piece, share”). The picture is that you split a sentence into its parts.
