Your parents-in-law are the mother and father of your husband or wife — the parents you gain through marriage, not through blood. English uses one word for both sides. Chinese does not: a wife’s husband’s parents are 公婆; a husband’s wife’s parents are 岳父母. People also say “my in-laws” for a wider group (brothers-in-law, and so on), though parents-in-law is only those two parents. Though actually, in loose talk “the in-laws” often means just the parents, and it can sound like a joke or a small complaint. The full phrase parents-in-law is plainer and more careful. You keep the in writing.
