Your father-in-law is the father of your husband or your wife. He is family by marriage, not by birth. English uses one word for both sides of the family. Though actually, the feeling in real life can be quite different — some people are close to this man, some hardly know him — but the word itself only names the relationship. In writing, the are the usual form: father-in-law. Do not mix him up with a , who is your parent’s new husband, not your partner’s father.
