Paratroops are paratroopers acting together as a military unit — the group, not one person. News often says the paratroops landed at night or took a bridge, meaning the whole body of those soldiers. The word almost always stays plural when it names the unit. You may also hear paratroop in front of another noun (a paratroop regiment), where it describes the kind of force. In careful talk, one jumper is a paratrooper; paratroops is the team they belong to.
