A parasol is a kind of umbrella people open for the sun, not for the rain. It keeps strong light and heat off your head and shoulders so you can walk or sit outside without burning. Many parasols look lighter and prettier than rain umbrellas — pale cloth, paper, or a garden stand over a table — and you still see them at the beach, in a park, or with an old-fashioned summer dress. In everyday talk a lot of people just say umbrella for both jobs; parasol sounds a little more careful or old-fashioned, and you meet it more in shops, in writing, or when someone wants to mark “this one is for shade.” You hold it like an umbrella. A rare verb, to parasol, means to shade yourself with one, but almost nobody needs that in speech.
組成From French parasol, from Italian parasole: para- (“to shield / keep off”) + sole (“sun”). So the pieces literally say “keep the sun off.”
