If something is paramount, it is more important than anything else in that situation — it comes first, and the other things wait. Safety is paramount on a building site; a child’s welfare is paramount in a family decision. It is a formal, serious adjective. You put it after is, or before a noun in set phrases (of paramount importance). People do not use it for small everyday choices (“Which snack is paramount?” would sound comic). Though actually, many students meet the word first as a film-studio name, Paramount, and think it is only a brand. The old French picture behind it is “up by the mountain” — at the top — which is why it came to mean “highest, above the rest.” There is a rare noun use in law and history (a paramount chief, a paramount title), but for the adjective “more important than anything else” is the one that matters.
組成From Anglo-Norman paramont, from Old French par (“by”) + amont (“upward”). Amont is from Latin ad montem (“to the mountain”). So the picture is “up at the top.”
