The Paralympics are a huge international sports meeting for athletes with disabilities — people who cannot use a part of the body in the usual way, or who have another kind of impairment the games are built around. They take place every four years, in the same city as the Olympic Games, and they start soon after those games end. You write it with a capital P because it is a name. Athletes are grouped so the racing is fair, and the sports include swimming, athletics, wheelchair basketball, and many more — not only sports for people who cannot walk. The name looks as if it must mean “the Olympics for paralysis,” and that is one old reading of para-; the organisers themselves prefer to hear it as “parallel Olympics”: another games, running beside the Olympics, not a lesser copy. People say “the Paralympics” the way they say “the Olympics”; the adjective is Paralympic.
