Paragliding is a sport in which you fly with a special parachute shaped more like a wing than like a round umbrella. You may run off a hill, or leave a plane; then you glide — you travel through the air for a long time, not just drop — before you float back down to the ground. That is the difference people care about: ordinary parachuting is mostly falling, with a chute that opens to save you; paragliding is flying. The same word paraglider can mean the wing or the person, which is a little messy, but that is how speakers actually use it.
