A parachutist is a person who jumps from a plane with a parachute — a big piece of cloth that opens in the air and slows the fall so the jumper does not hit the ground too hard. The word names the person, not the cloth: the cloth is a parachute; the jumper is a parachutist. Some people do this as a sport, some as army or rescue work, and some just once, for a thrill. You may also hear parachuter, which is a bit more informal; parachutist is the tidier word. is close, though that word puts the accent on falling through the sky for fun, not only on using the chute.
