A pantile is a roof tile with a curve in it — an S-shaped bend, so that one side dips down and the other rises up. When you lay them in rows, the raised edge of one tile sits over the dipped edge of the next, and the rain runs down the little channels they make. That is the whole idea: the shape does the work, so you need fewer tiles than with flat ones. You see them on old houses in England, in Holland, and around the Mediterranean, and they are often a warm orange-red. This is not an everyday word. Most English speakers, if you point at such a roof, will just say "tiles" or "a roof". You meet "pantile" in building work, in books about old houses, in property that want to sound charming, and sometimes in place names or pub names. If a student uses it in normal conversation, people will understand from the second half of the word, but it will sound a little . Note that the "pan" here does not mean a cooking pan in any useful sense — see `parts`.

The "pan" part is the older, wider sense of pan: a shallow dish or hollow, a dip that something can sit in. So a pantile is a tile with a hollow in it, a tile with a scoop. Once you see it that way the word stops being strange.
