    A panellist is one of a small group of well-known people invited to sit together and talk on a radio or television programme — answering questions, arguing a little, or judging a quiz. They are not the host. They are the guests in that group, which English also calls a panel. You meet this word with discussion shows, comedy quizzes, and news programmes. It is mainly a British spelling; American English panelist. Though actually, the “panel” here is a group of people, not a piece of wood — same English word, two very different pictures, which is why this one fools .

組成panel + -ist. The -ist ending means “a person who belongs to this”. Here panel means a small group chosen to talk, not a piece of wood.
