A paling is a thin post, wood or metal, with a point at the top. People stand many palings in a line to make a fence. The fence itself can also be called palings, or a paling fence. It is a practical word, a little old-fashioned and a little British. In American English you are more likely to hear picket for the same kind of pointed board. Though actually, paling is also the ordinary -ing form of the verb pale — “she is paling” meaning her face is losing colour. That is a completely different word that just looks the same. This entry is the fence, not the face.
