Palestine is a name for land at the eastern end of the Mediterranean, holy to Jews, Christians, and Muslims. In English it often means the area that includes the West Bank of the River Jordan, , and the Gaza Strip — the land the Arab population, the Palestinians, want as their own independent country. Since the 1990s parts of this area have been run by the Palestinian Authority, but the are unfinished and people disagree, often , about borders, names, and who should govern: Israel also claims much of this land. The name itself is old. Romans used Palaestina for a province there, and the word goes back to Philistia, the land of the . Today Palestine can mean a hoped-for country, a geographic region, or, in older books, a wider Holy Land. The tidy one-line answer is tidier than real life; students will hear strong feelings around this word. The kind thing is to know it is a real place and a real people, and that the story is not simple.
組成From Latin Palaestīna, from Greek Palaistínē, from Hebrew p'léshet, Philistia, the land of the Philistines. Ancient Egyptian and Assyrian records have similar names for a people in that region.
