An open container with a curved handle, made of metal, wood, or plastic, used for carrying water, milk, or other liquids.
「pail」就是提得動的那種桶子，上面有一個彎的提把。它跟 bucket 指的是同一樣東西，差別在誰用、在哪裡用：現在多數人（尤其英式英文）說 bucket，pail 在美式英文裡還活著，多半出現在農場（a milk pail）、海邊玩沙和老一點的故事裡，讀起來帶著一點鄉下或懷舊的味道。

這一層的 pail 不是那個容器，而是「一桶那麼多」的量，例如 two pails of water 就是兩桶水的份量。英文有一整組這樣的字：a cup of、a spoonful of、a bucket of，都是拿容器來當單位。判斷是哪一層很簡單：句子在數幾桶，就是這一層；句子在講桶子被提著、被放下，就是容器那一層。
