1. 1

In Britain, a P-plate is a small white square with a green letter P, fixed to a car. The driver has already passed the driving test and may drive alone — they are just still new at it. The sign is a quiet warning to everyone else: this person has passed, though actually they have not had much practice yet. In Britain you do not have to display it; some new drivers put it on, some do not. It is not the same as an L-plate, which is for a who has not passed. (Australia uses P-plates in a stricter, different way. The sense here is the British green P.)
