An ox-eye is a wild flower with a round yellow centre and, most often, white petals around it, so it looks like a daisy, only often bigger and bolder in a field. People also call it an ox-eye daisy. The name is a picture-name: someone thought the yellow disc looked a bit like an ox’s eye. You see it in meadows, roadsides, and old grassland, and gardeners grow it too. It is a plant name, not a word for a real animal’s eye, and it is not an insult. In ordinary English ox-eye (or oxeye daisy) means this flower; scientists have other names, but learners do not need them to recognise it in a story or a countryside walk.
