An oviparous animal has its young by laying eggs, and those eggs grow outside the mother’s body. Birds, most frogs, most fish, and almost all insects are oviparous. The other big box in the textbook is viviparous: the young grow inside the body and are born live, like cats and people. Though actually nature is messier than two boxes — some sharks keep the eggs inside until they hatch, which science books call ovoviviparous. Oviparous is a science-class word. You would not use it at the dinner table about the egg on your plate.
