An ovum is an egg in the body sense: the female cell that might grow into a baby if it joins with sperm. Doctors and biology teachers use ovum; at the breakfast table people just say egg. That everyday egg (the one with a shell) is a bird’s whole package — shell, white, — and is not what ovum means here. In humans the ovum is tiny, lives inside the mother’s body, and is released at ovulation. The plural is ova, not ovums. It sounds formal and slightly Latin, because it is Latin.

組成Borrowed from Latin ōvum, “egg”. The ordinary English word egg came by another old path and is a doublet of ovum.
