When you overwrite a computer file or document, you put new information in the same place as the old information, and the old information is gone. People say this when they save a document under the same name, copy one file on top of another, or tell a programme to replace what is already stored. Though actually, at work people stretch it to any time new data takes the old data’s seat — a cell in a , a line in a database, a track on a tape. The word carries a small warning: once something is overwritten, you usually cannot get the earlier version back unless you made a copy first. It is computer talk. You would not use it for handwriting on paper; that is just writing over something, or crossing it out.
