If something is oversubscribed, too many people have asked for it: more names than there are places. Schools, courses, flats, and ticket lists are often oversubscribed. In money news, a share sale is oversubscribed when people want to buy more shares than the company is offering. It is almost always an adjective in real use; oversubscribe as a verb exists, but you will meet oversubscribed far more. Though actually, it is sharper than popular. A café can be popular and still have empty chairs. Oversubscribed means there was a hard number of places, and the applications went past it. Fully booked is the hotel cousin; oversubscribed is the word when people put their names down and the list ran over.
