To overstock is to get or keep more of something than you need. Shops and warehouses use it all the time: they buy so much that the storeroom is full, and some of it may sit there unsold. You can overstock a home too, though that sounds a bit . There is also a noun: the overstock is the extra pile itself, and shops often sell overstock to clear space. Though actually, people stretch it a little. It is not only the moment of buying too much; it can mean having too much sitting around, even if the buying happened months ago. In everyday talk, we bought too much is more common; overstock belongs more to shop and business English. It is about goods on shelves, not about shares on the stock market.
