When you overstay, you stay in a place longer than the rules allow. The limit is the point: a date on a visa, a checkout time, a visit that was meant to end. People use it most about travel papers — you overstay your visa if you are still in the country after the last allowed day — and hosts use it too. There is a set phrase, overstay your welcome, said when a guest stays so long the host is tired of them, even if no clock was . It is a little formal; a friend might just say you stayed too long. Though actually, staying a long time is not the same thing. You can stay three weeks by invitation and not overstay at all. The verb is the form you will hear; a noun overstay exists, but it is much less common.

組成over- (beyond, too much) + stay (to remain). You remain past the allowed time. The over- piece goes back through Old English ofer-; stay is the ordinary English verb.
