An overshoe is a rubber shoe you wear over an ordinary shoe to keep your feet dry. You keep your normal shoes on, then pull the rubber cover on top, so rain, snow, or mud does not spoil the shoe underneath. In some places people say galoshes for the same kind of thing. They used to be more common when city streets were wet and dirty and leather shoes were precious. Today many people just wear boots. You still meet overshoe in shops and in older writing. It is a plain, practical word. Though actually, some people also use it loosely for any rubber rain shoe, even if they took their indoor shoes off first. In Taiwan, 雨鞋 is often a boot you wear instead; an overshoe is the cover that goes over.
