If something is overrated, it is not as good or as important as some people think or say. The praise has run ahead of the thing itself. A film, a restaurant, a school, a holiday town, even a kind of person can be called overrated. It is a common, slightly sharp opinion word: you are pushing back against loud praise. Young people use it a lot online. It is also the ordinary -ed form of the verb . Though actually, overrated does not mean bad, and it does not mean “I hate it.” A good book can still be overrated if people talk as if it were perfect. You are talking about the gap between the noise and the thing.
